Come test your

"trivial knowledge"

 of

Bobby Fischer Trivia !

      Two Separate Groups:

Adult   AND   Youth ( 17 and younger )

Youth may choose to play in the adult section.

As usual, we had a bit of controversy in last year's trivia contest, this time in the "youth" section.  As I remember, there were two players vying for the "youth" trivia title; a taller, more knowledgeable player, and a younger, not so "experienced" trivia player.  With the next round quickly approaching, I had to ensure that the trivia contest would end, so as not to delay the start of round 5.  I clearly stated to both remaining contestants that a wrong answer would automatically lose.  The next question was,,, "Who was the 5th Official World Chess Champion?"  The taller youth, who had consistently displayed a deep knowledge of trivia throughout the event, quickly answered with "Botvinnik".   Unfortunately, that answer handed victory to his trivia opponent, by the sheer fact that it was incorrect.  ( The Dutch World Champion - Max Euwe - was the 5th )  Soooooooooooo,,,, the player who actually knew more trivia took 2nd place (with a 2nd place cash prize !), while the winner, who maybe did not have the same mastery of trivia, simply knew how to "play the game" better that day, by not hanging himself.

However, with some of the concerns voiced by the taller player afterward, I have decided to re-vamp the trivia contest in the following ways.  First, all trivia questions, for both sections, will be directly, or indirectly related to Bobby Fischer. (Not Bobby Fischer and other World Champions like in 2010).  The other changes in format will be presented below.  I would like to take this opportunity to pass along to all trivia contestants, a heads-up about the possibility of a new "award".  If any trivia contestant has a legitimate complaint, I will (and I have) try to rectify the situation right then and there.  However, if any contestant, young or old, wins a prize for something that is mostly designed to be fun in spirit, then displays a world class level of complaining, and whining, (and moaning) I will be prepared in 2011 to award an "Equestrian Posterior" trophy, on the spot!

After Round 4, and after lunch, the trivia contest will begin at 5:15 (or so)!

The format will be as follows:  Youth (17 and Younger ) will go first.  I will ask 5-8 questions with the expressed purpose of culling the field down to 3-5 contestants.  At THAT time, we'll move  into the " Correct Answer Advances - Wrong Answer is Finished" phase.  When we reach the finals with only 2 players, I will wing it the best I can, so be prepared for anything, but mostly to have some fun.

The Grand Prize for the Youth Trivia Contest, will be a framed movie poster of "Searching for Bobby Fischer" that was generously donated to me by the 2010 Utah State Chess Champion, Damian Nash for this specific purpose.  There may, or may not, be any additional prizes.

For the Adult Trivia Section, the format will be exactly the same, with the following exceptions.  Stephen Gordon, and Steve Hoisington, will automatically advance to the 2nd phase.  (That will open the door for 3-5 other players to have their chance to shine.  So the Adult Trivia Section could have anywhere from 5-7 players competing in the "Correct Answer Advances - Wrong Answer is Finished" phase!  I will try to make it so we have 3 finalists in this section, with all 3 finalists receiving some sort of prize.  (Small,, sorry folks,, small cash prizes,,, or maybe a trophy will be up for grabs)

ANYBODY who wants to, will be able to compete in the trivia contest.   Players, parents, coaches, clones, pets,,,,,,,,you get the idea.   If there are more than 50-60 people involved, we'll just have to whittle the crowd down a little quicker with tougher questions.        The entire contest will last between 15 and 20 minutes,,,22 at the most (hopefully).

Each trivia contestant will have an ample supply of paper, and a writing utensil to record their answers.

As contestants are "eliminated" from the contest, I will probably be asking a few of you to help in judging the "timeliness" of an answer.   Contestants,,,, for those initial questions,,,please write your answers BOLDLY ,  so that they can be easily seen.

So study up, and come prepared.   Mostly, be ready to have some fun with this !!!!!

( A helpful hint to those who have read this far:  There will be times when the correct spelling of an answer will count. )
